Stone Walls

Hudson Valley stonework, built to hold the land.

Stone Walls Built Right

Stone walls are a Hudson Valley tradition, and a practical solution for yards with slope and elevation change. We build retaining walls that actually hold back soil — with proper drainage, base, and batter — not just stacked stone that leans and fails in a few years.

From dry-stacked fieldstone walls to mortared retaining walls and freestanding landscape borders, we work with natural stone that fits the character of the region.

Our Process

  1. 1

    Excavate & Base

We dig to depth and set a compacted base — the foundation that keeps a wall from settling and leaning over time.

  2. 2

    Build & Batter

Stones are set with a slight inward batter and interlocking courses so the wall resists the soil pressure behind it.

  3. 3

    Drain & Finish

Drainage aggregate and weep paths relieve water pressure — the detail that decides whether a retaining wall lasts or fails.

Stone Walls — Common Questions

How tall can a stone retaining wall be without engineering?

Lower landscape walls are straightforward; taller walls holding back significant soil loads need proper engineering, drainage, and sometimes reinforcement. We'll advise based on your site.

Dry stack or mortared — which should I choose?

Dry-stacked walls flex and drain naturally, ideal for shorter landscape walls. Mortared walls are stronger and more rigid for taller retaining applications. We recommend based on height and load.
